WaterGate
Message processor for FidoNet & Internet/Usenet
Upgrade information

14 October 1996,
This file describes to procedure to upgrade WaterGate from older
versions to the latest version.
The most important thing about upgrading is getting the database
(*.TDB) files compatible with the latest format. Since 0.92 there
is a special program called UPGRADE.EXE that takes care of
upgrading all older formats to the latest release. In the past,
there used to be a separate upgrade program for each release.
The one file not touched by UPGRADE.EXE is the ROUTE.TDB ASCII
configuration file. The changes to this file are very specific and
you need to read the upgrade instructions (these) that come with each
release to make sure you don't miss anything important, especially if
you are upgrading from a somewhat older version.
When upgrading, you don't just want to get ready to run the new
executables. It is important that you become aware of what has
changed in the new version. All the changes are detailed in the
CHANGES.DOC file. Read that file!
Upgrading is rather simple:
1) Backup all executables, databases (the *.TDB files) and the batch
files that run WaterGate (basically your WaterGate system
directory).
2) replace all the executable files: WTRGATE.EXE, WTRCONF.EXE,
WTRUTIL.EXE, WTRSTAT.EXE, WTRTEST.EXE and, if you are using these,
WTRGATEO.EXE and WTRGATEO.OVR.
3) Run the UPGRADE.EXE program to upgrade your database files. Notice
that you have to use the command line option NOW or nothing will
happen.
4) Copy the changes from the new language file, or replace it
completely. This is especially important if you have customized
it for a local language. See below for details.
5) Edit the ROUTE.TDB file according to the details below.
Here are the details for upgrading 0.91 to 0.92:
- The command line options for WtrGate have changed. The old ones
are still supported, but the new ones are more efficient. Use one
or more from SCAN, TOSS, UUCP, BAG and SMTP. See WTRGATE ? as well.
- The FORCENOBITMASK option has moved from the ROUTE.TDB file to the
UUCP settings section in WtrConf. Notice that a bug was fixed so
the UUCP job names are no longer too long when using the bitmask
option. If you used FORCENOBITMASK, then you can now try without.
- The TXT files for %QUERY en %LIST have changed. Make sure you
replace those (if you are using them) to avoid incorrect replies
to your users.
Good luck,
Ramon
